Fatigue remains a leading cause of transportation accidents

Pennsylvania readers know that truckers have a critical role in the economy, as they are responsible for transporting goods across the country. Because of the pressures of the job, fatigued trucking is a serious concern. There are many men and women operating large, heavy commercial vehicles who may be too tired to be safe.

According to the National Safety Council, as many as 97 percent of transportation employers have concerns about fatigue and how it will impact their drivers. Fatigue can make it difficult for truckers to make smart decisions behind the wheel and may increase the chance of an accident. If you are a victim of a truck accident, it is possible that fatigue played a role in what happened to you.

Too tired to be safe behind the wheel

Research and statistics indicate that fatigue is a serious enough problem to take action. It is important for transportation employers to enforce safety standards and allow employees to get adequate rest when needed. This is a problem that is wide in scope, and it can affect drivers in many different types of industries, including construction, manufacturing and more.

Specifically, truckers work shifts, and often, they receive payment upon delivered load. This, along with other pressures, may increase the likelihood that a trucker will drive too long, ignore safety standards and even be involved in a collision. Consider the following about the problem of tired driving:

  • A higher percentage of employers believe tired driving is a problem -- more than employees.
  • The National Safety Counsel says that as many as 13 percent of all workplace accidents, including transportation accidents, relate to fatigue in some way.
  • Research indicates that as many as 70 percent of workers are tired on the job.

There is a significant amount of research and statistics that indicate that fatigue is a problem in many different industries. While the problem is clear, however, the solution is not.

So, what can you do?

If you are a victim of a truck accident, you have the right to seek compensation for your pain and suffering. It is possible to hold liable parties accountable for negligence and reckless behaviors that cause a collision, but you do not have to walk through this process alone.

When it comes to dealing with insurance companies and trucking companies, you may feel overwhelmed about what you can do to protect your interests. You may find it beneficial to work with an attorney experienced in complex accident claims.
